The National University of Singapore has been working for two years in order to create a robot capable of swimming as efficiently, gracefully, and as fast as a manta ray.
Manta rays are the best! They are a type of cartilaginous fish belonging to the same family as stingrays, and are filter feeders.
A filter feeder is a type of predator that specifically eats plankton. They can get as big as 22 feet! That’s approximately four times my height!
Anyways, the MantaDroid is much smaller, about a foot long (wingspan-wise) and weighs only 1.5 lbs. It is going to be used for underwater surveying, search and rescue organizations, measuring water chemistry, and with environmental agencies.
